Step By Step A Year In Review

A Message from Our CEO

Dear friends,

At Project Concern International (PCI), we work directly with communities at home and abroad to make meaningful change in people's lives. Our work this year spanned some of the most vital challenges in our complex and ever-changing world, from supporting mothers as they care for babies born too soon to transforming agricultural techniques with small farmers facing the devastating effects of climate change.

In fiscal year 2019, PCI's programs and projects impacted more than 21 million lives across Asia, Africa and the Americas, but those incredible numbers aren't achieved all at once. PCI works step by step, day by day, with individuals and families to build healthy, resilient communities. We embark on this journey alongside the communities we serve, walking with them as we build the path forward together, one brick at a time.

As the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. teaches, "Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. ... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals."

The dedicated individuals moving PCI toward our goals include every one of our generous supporters, donors and partners - like you.

It is because of your commitment that we are able to keep taking steps toward a brighter future. Your support funds life-changing projects in some of the most vulnerable communities on Earth.

Take Bertha Banda, a 32-year-old mother of four from the Balaka district in Malawi. Bertha participated in a PCI training program supported by the U.S. government, and the American people, to advance her career and help provide nutritious food to her drought-stricken community. Now, Bertha says, "Lack of food is a story of the past for me and my family."

Our innovative programs have earned support from across the private sector, from working with Colgate-Palmolive to bring out healthy smiles in Nicaragua to partnering with Google.org and other innovative tech companies to build game-changing apps for pastoralists in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania. With the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we are taking our social mobilization approach to tremendous scale in India to promote lifesaving, disease prevention medicines. And right in our own backyard, PCI is working with generous local donors to root out the causes of human trafficking and keep kids safe in San Diego.

Perhaps most exciting of all is thinking about what is to come. As of the publication of this Annual Report, we are now merging with Global Communities, expanding our presence and ability to accelerate positive change in more than 35 countries. With your support, we will continue walking, step by step, toward a future of healthy, resilient communities, at home and around the world.

With gratitude,

Carrie Hessler-Radelet

Around the World with PCI

In the past year, PCI's proven solutions and innovative approaches have earned us an increasingly important role on the world's stage. We take pride in the ever more impactful way we are contributing to meaningful, measurable change in people's lives in vulnerable communities across Asia, Africa and the Americas. We know that we cannot do this work alone, so we partner with some of the best in the business to share ideas, offer lessons learned, and grow together toward a shared vision of healthy, resilient individuals, families and communities. As experts in community-led development, PCI works closely with partners and supporters to ensure our approaches can be scaled for maximum sustainable impact.

Roger and Maria BraultOver their lifetimes, Drs. Roger and Maria Brault proved to be not only exemplary members of the medical community but generous philanthropists who were dedicated to leaving "an indelible imprint on the soul of the world." Both served on the board of Project Concern International (PCI) in the '90s, and their service and support made a significant contribution toward PCI's efforts to address critical global health challenges.

Beyond their support for PCI, Roger and Maria lent their medical skills as volunteers in multiple locations, including St. Lucia, Haiti, Colombia, Guatemala and Indonesia. They also spent time working with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, India, and served as volunteers and directors for hospices in London and Hawaii.

The couple met as students at the University of Ottawa Medical School and married in 1954. After graduating in 1957 as co-valedictorians of their class, they moved to Hawaii to complete their residencies - Roger in surgery and Maria in internal medicine. Roger then served as chief of staff at Castle Memorial Hospital in Kailua and Maria became the first female physician at the Straub Clinic and Hospital in Honolulu.

Eventually, the husband-and-wife medical team decided to combine their powers and open their own medical office in Kailua. They spent the remainder of their careers focused on serving both the local community and those in developing countries as part of the Catholic Medical Mission. They were instrumental in founding Hospice Hawaii to care for people with life-limiting illnesses and continued their support of PCI.

The Braults lived exemplary lives of service above self, and we are fortunate and so grateful they chose to make PCI part of their legacy.

Julie Tafel Klaus is an esteemed community leader in San Diego and a compassionate humanitarian who has generously dedicated years of service to organizations like PCI. She first became connected to our work through one of her daughters, who traveled with The Bishop's School to visit PCI's Children's Home in India. "That visit was life-changing for Cameron," Julie said. "And, as it turns out, for me."

As an avid traveler, Julie has crossed the globe to visit PCI's programs in India, Guatemala and Zambia, seeking to understand the issues facing women, children and families, and to support some of the world's most vulnerable communities. From meeting with Women Empowered participants in City Heights to holding newborn babies at Casa Materna, she has always understood the importance of spending time with the people at the heart of PCI's work.

In addition to being an invaluable part of PCI's development and gala committees, Julie is a longtime supporter of the Salk Institute and a team co-captain for Padres Pedal the Cause, a bike ride that raises critical funds for cancer research in San Diego. She also serves on the board of Spark Ventures, an organization that works to provide sustainable solutions to lift children out of poverty.

In 2019, PCI honored Julie with the Anne Otterson Community Connector Award for her tireless efforts to unite people and organizations as a force for good in the world. During her acceptance speech, she said: "What lifts one of us, lifts us all. And it is up to each of us, every day, to raise each other higher."

We are so grateful for all the ways in which Julie continues to champion PCI and the children and families we serve.

PwC Strategy&PwC Strategy& is a top consulting firm that helps the world's leading businesses, governments and organizations drive transformational change, create new organizational models, and increase value and effectiveness. With frontline teams across the globe, Strategy& leverages its business and technology expertise to increase the impact of organizations like PCI that are addressing society's most pressing socioeconomic, health and environmental issues.

In that spirit, volunteers from PwC Strategy& have provided countless hours of pro bono services to PCI in a range of critical areas, including invaluable strategic analysis and guidance to our Women Empowered program and AfriScout. They've also partnered with PCI to provide extensive analysis of the development sector in the UK and to help us develop a localization strategy, framework and operation guide for developing a network of PCI affiliates in our partner countries. These combined efforts have significantly contributed to the effectiveness and impact of PCI's global mission.

Volunteers shared, "It's been a joy to work with PCI over a series of projects, and really putting into practice our PwC values. Seeing the impact our work has had towards such a fantastic cause has made the experience incredibly rewarding."

PCI's efforts to enhance health, end hunger, overcome hardship and advance women & girls worldwide would not be possible without the support of individuals, foundations, corporations, governments and partners that believe and invest in our programs. If we inadvertently omitted your name from our list of donors or if you would like to be listed differently in future recognition lists, please let us know so we can rectify the error.
