On International Women’s Day, Global Communities celebrates the strength of the many women and girls living in humanitarian crises around the world. We believe that gender equality is essential to achieving effective and life-saving humanitarian action. For us, this means engaging women and girls directly as partners, including empowering grassroots women’s organizations, to not dictate but rather to listen and empower those that are affected. Women and girls are the best placed to make change for themselves and their communities, especially to rebuild after a crisis. Our approach to addressing GBV in crises supports the goals of the Call to Action on Protection from Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies:

Establish specialized GBV services and programs that are accessible to anyone affected by GBV and are available from the onset of an emergency.

Integrate and implement actions to prevent GBV and to mitigate GBV risk across all levels and sectors of humanitarian response from the earliest stages of an emergency and throughout the program cycle.

Mainstream gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls throughout humanitarian action.
